What is a Pathway program?
A pathway program is a pre-requisite that the student must complete before starting the main study program. They are generally language-focused courses requiring students to improve their language skills before enrolling in an undergraduate program at a designated learning institution.
What is the duration of the pathway program?
The duration of the pathway program varies. However, the standard period is usually between four to twelve months. Once the pathway program is completed, the student can apply to college-level programs. They can also transfer to a degree-awarding course of choice in the same institution from where they completed the pathway program.
Is there any advantage associated with the pathway program?
While the conditioning of a pathway program may upset some, it’s also beneficial in certain aspects. The student is exempted from IELTS or TOEFL.
What are the types of pathway programs?
The letter of acceptance states if the student is required to complete a pre-requisite program. This may happen if secondary school in the student’s home country is not deemed equivalent to a Canadian secondary school. The types of pathway programs are:
- Standard programs: The student is enrolled in the program to complete the program to be able to take a language test such as IELTS or TOEFL.
- Seamless programs: Some accepting institutions and language schools have agreements allowing students who have completed the language course to enroll without submitting official exam scores.
Is a study permit necessary for a pathway program?
A study permit is only necessary if the pathway program is more than six months long. However, the student must have a temporary resident visa (TRV) or an electronic travel authorization. (eTA).
